Oral cancer screening is included in all our new patient examination and routine dental check ups.
Unfortunately, over the last decade new cases of oral cancer has increased by 58%. Last year, 2702 British citizens lost their life to oral cancer.
Major causes of oral cancer include:
- Smokeless tobacco
- Betel quid
- Infection with human papilloma virus (HPV)
58% of oral cancer are involved with the tongue or tonsils, however it can also occur on the lips, gums, cheeks, roof and floor of the mouth, vocal chords, throat, oropharynx. The good news is that if caught early through early detection and screening then the survival rates and prognosis increase.
At Cosmetic Smile & Implant Centre we strongly believe that it is our duty as dentists to screen for oral cancer. The screening procedure is completely invasive and pain free. Results are also given immediately. It includes:
- A Visual Examination – this involves a thorough inspection of the inside of your mouth which includes your cheeks, tongue, roof and floor of your mouth and your throat. We will also inspect the outside of your mouth, face and neck.
- A detailed history – from this we will be able to determine your risk of oral cancer
If there are any inconclusive findings we will always refer to a specialist as we believe it is better to be safe than sorry.
If you have any concerns or worries outside of your normal routine check ups, then please do not hesitate to book an appointment with us and one of our dentists will be happy to provide an assessment. Together, we can fight oral cancer.
